Poor Finish for a Good Run
17 Aug 2009
The first visit back to Fayetteville Motor Speedway since this spring didn’t turn out the way the team had hoped. The performance was there, but we just didn’t have the finish we were looking for.
After overcoming many issues with the car over the past week, we were finally able to get the Williams Plantworks open wheel back together Friday night before the race. The P&M Performance Racing Engine had a fresh tune up and was ready to go. Patrick, our crew chief, checked every nut and bolt and alignments on the car. Team Hurricane was ready.
Shortly after unloading the car, Hurricane Hank was able to get a few laps of practice in. Although the car seemed to be performing well, there weren’t really enough green flag practice laps to get a good feel for the car. We made a couple of minor changes and waited for qualifying.
When qualifying time came around, Hurricane Hank strapped himself into the car and proceeded to the staging lane. Many fast times were set and Hank was going out late in the qualifying order. Hank went on the track, brought the car up to speed and cut an excellent lap to take the pole!
After making a few more changes to adjust for the changing track conditions, Hank strapped back into the car and prepared to take the green flag. As the green flag flew, Hurricane Hank powered to the lead. Hurricane Hank had a tremendous battle with Andy Floyd through out the race with several exciting moments including three wide racing as they worked their way through lapped traffic. Everything was looking good until two laps to go. At some point in the racing program the car received some sheet metal damage to the right rear which resulted in the sheet metal to rub the tire causing it to go flat, resulting in an uncharacteristic tenth place finish for the night.
Overall Hank and the team were very pleased with the performance since it had been several months since racing on that track. We look forward to the next race at Fayetteville and to this weekend’s race at Dublin. We hope to see all the hot shoes from both tracks at Dublin this weekend.
We’d like to say “Thanks” to Williams Plantworks, P&M Performance Racing Engines, Belangers Bodies and Graphics, Butler Motorsports Media and SSR Race Cars for their support this year. Without their help we probably wouldn’t be on the track!
